What it means
Self-test of the CCD/LED scanning unit in the absolute encoder or scale head failed.
Likely causes
- LED illumination degraded below detection threshold
- CCD damaged by vibration/shock
- internal moisture corrosion in the head
Triage note: Try cleaning + mounting check first (manual lists them), but a true E821 self-test fail means sealed-head replacement - no field repair. Mirrors CNC alarm 4187.
