Siemens alarm 231442: <location>Encoder 1: Battery voltage pre-alarm

What it means

A SINAMICS motor or direct measuring-system encoder that stores multiturn absolute position from an internal battery reports that battery voltage no longer guarantees data retention while switched off. It is a pre-warning with no immediate drive reaction, but once the battery dies, absolute position is lost and axes need re-referencing after every power cycle.

Likely causes

• Absolute-encoder multiturn backup battery at end of life
• Long storage time without power
• Corroded battery contacts inside encoder module
